Understanding the Emotional Impact of Menopause

Many women, myself included, have felt blindsided by the emotional changes that come with menopause. Dr. Shepherd explained why this happens:

"There are changes to the brain that occur because of menopause, and that in turn impacts the neurotransmitters, memory, the actual structure of the brain."

This isn't just about hormones affecting our mood. It's a fundamental shift in our brain chemistry and structure. No wonder we often feel like we've lost touch with ourselves!

Key Points About Emotional Changes in Menopause:

  • It's not just hormones - there are actual changes in brain structure
  • These changes affect neurotransmitters like serotonin, GABA, and dopamine
  • Understanding these changes can help us approach them with more compassion for ourselves

The Holistic Approach to Emotional Wellness

Dr. Shepherd advocates for a 360-degree view of menopause care, which I find incredibly refreshing. Her clinic, Sanctum Med and Wellness, offers a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Traditional Western medicine
  • Eastern practices like acupuncture
  • Life coaching and therapy
  • Mind-body practices like yoga and meditation

This holistic approach acknowledges that our emotional wellness is connected to every aspect of our health. As Dr. Shepherd puts it:

"I want them to see themselves physically and also emotionally in a different light."

Mindfulness: A Powerful Tool for Emotional Balance

One of the most effective tools for managing emotional changes during menopause is mindfulness. Dr. Shepherd emphasized how being present and aware can profoundly impact our experience of menopause symptoms.

Mindfulness practices can:

  • Deepen our connection with our bodies
  • Improve our body image and self-acceptance
  • Reduce anxiety and stress
  • Help us process and regulate our emotions more effectively

I've personally found that incorporating mindfulness into my daily routine has made a huge difference in how I navigate the emotional ups and downs of this transition.

Reframing Menopause: From Crisis to Opportunity

Perhaps the most powerful takeaway from my conversation with Dr. Shepherd was her perspective on menopause as a new beginning, not an ending. She encourages us to see this transition as an opportunity to redefine ourselves:

"We've created this screenplay of menopause being a very horror story type screenplay, and I'm really trying to push it over into the narrative of a comedic love story."

This reframing can have a profound impact on our emotional wellness. Instead of mourning what we've lost, we can celebrate what we're gaining - wisdom, self-knowledge, and a new phase of life full of possibilities.

Practical Steps for Emotional Wellness in Menopause

Based on my conversation with Dr. Shepherd, here are some practical steps you can take to support your emotional wellness during menopause:

  • Educate yourself: Understanding what's happening in your body and brain can help you approach changes with more compassion.
  • Practice mindfulness: Even a few minutes of mindfulness practice each day can make a big difference.
  • Seek support: Whether it's therapy, a support group, or open conversations with friends, don't go through this alone.
  • Consider hormone therapy: For some women, hormone replacement therapy can help balance mood swings. Discuss this option with your healthcare provider.
  • Prioritize self-care: This includes nutrition, exercise, and activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
  • Explore new passions: Use this time to rediscover old interests or find new ones. Engaging in fulfilling activities can boost mood and self-esteem.

The Role of Pleasure in Emotional Wellness

One aspect of emotional wellness that often gets overlooked is pleasure. Dr. Shepherd emphasized that sexual health and pleasure don't end with menopause - they just change. Maintaining intimacy and exploring new forms of pleasure can significantly boost emotional well-being during this transition.

Conclusion: Embracing Your Menopause Journey

As we wrapped up our conversation, Dr. Shepherd shared what brings her pleasure:

"The ability to sit with myself and understand in that moment of being present, what are the things that have gotten me there? What are the things that allow me to reflect in a way that I feel good about myself, and then also, what are the things that I'm going to do to contribute to the legacy of my health?"

This, to me, encapsulates the essence of emotional wellness in menopause. It's about being present, reflecting on our journey, and actively shaping our future health and happiness.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to managing the emotional aspects of menopause. It's about finding what works for you, whether that's therapy, mindfulness practices, hormone therapy, lifestyle changes, or a combination of approaches. The most important thing is to listen to your body, seek support when you need it, and never forget that your emotional well-being matters – at every stage of life.
