Body shame is inherited
“What I found in working with hundreds of women that at the root of our body image concerns is shame inherited from societal, cultural or family messaging.”
No need to lose 10 pounds first
“You don't have to beat yourself up in the gym or wait till you've lost those 10 pounds to experience pleasure. Your body is capable of experiencing infinite amounts of pleasure just the way it is right now.”
Wear the shorts
“Remember to love yourself, wear the damn shorts and turn up the heat.”
“It's not so much how you feel about your body but how you care for your body that matters. This means listening to your body, nourishing her with food, sleep, movement, pleasure.”

As the temperature rises and layers come off, many midlife women find themselves grappling with body image issues.
The societal pressure to have a "beach-ready" body can be overwhelming, especially when combined with the physical changes that come with perimenopause and menopause. But here's the truth: your body, with all its beautiful midlife curves, is worthy of feeling love, pleasure, and confidence - both on the beach and in the bedroom!

The Midlife Body Image Challenge
Midlife brings a host of changes to our bodies. Weight gain, dry skin, and hot flashes are just a few of the physical transformations we might experience. These changes, coupled with societal messages about aging and beauty, can shake even the most confident woman's self-image.
Many of my clients report negative self-talk as they prepare for summer, scrutinizing every perceived flaw in the mirror. But remember, no one judges you as harshly as you judge yourself. Making peace with your midlife body is an inside job, and it starts with challenging those internalized messages about how we "should" look.
Cultivating Body Confidence This Summer
Developing a positive relationship with your body isn't about changing how you look - it's about changing how you feel and care for yourself. Here are some strategies to help you cultivate body confidence this summer:
- Practice mindful body awareness
- Focus on what your body CAN do, not just how it looks
- Nourish your body with good food, rest, and movement
- Speak to yourself with kindness and compassion
Quick Confidence Boost:
Try this simple practice when you're feeling self-conscious about your summer body:
- Take a few deep breaths
- Soften your shoulders
- Notice how it feels to be in your body without judgment
- Appreciate what your body does for you - how it moves, breathes, and experiences the world
Remember, mindfulness isn't about changing anything. It's about accepting what is with compassion and curiosity.
Bringing Confidence into the Bedroom
Body image concerns don't just affect us on the beach - they can significantly impact our intimate relationships too. Negative self-image can interfere with every stage of the sexual response cycle, from desire to satisfaction.
You might find yourself:
- Rejecting intimate encounters
- Hiding your body during intimacy
- Limiting sexual positions
- Disconnecting or rushing through sex
But here's what's important to remember: your partner is turned on by you as a whole person - your confidence, your pleasure, your unique expression of sensuality. They're not focused on the details you might be self-conscious about.
Keys to Bedroom Confidence
To boost your confidence and experience more pleasure in the bedroom this summer:
- Focus on sensation rather than appearance
- Engage all your senses during intimate moments
- Communicate openly with your partner about your feelings
- Practice self-pleasure to build body confidence
- Use your voice to express what feels good
Remember, your body's capacity for pleasure has nothing to do with how it looks. You deserve to experience all the pleasure your body is capable of, exactly as you are right now.
Summer Intentions and Affirmations
Setting intentions and using affirmations can be powerful tools for shifting your mindset. Try these summer-themed intentions:
- "My body is my ally in enjoying summer."
- "I trust my body's wisdom to keep me cool."
- "My body welcomes summer pleasure."
And boost your confidence with these affirmations:
- "My body is worthy of love and summer pleasure."
- "I am beautiful and sensual at any age, in any season."
- "I embrace and celebrate my changing body in all its summer glory."
Set these as reminders on your phone, write them in a journal or repeat them to yourself in the mirror. It might feel awkward at first, but stick with it - you might be surprised at how powerful these simple statements can be.
Embracing Your Summer Self
Your pleasure has no age limit or expiration date, and neither does your beauty or your right to feel confident in your skin. This summer, I invite you to:
- Wear the shorts
- Put on the bikini
- Say YES to pleasure
- Thank your body
- Love yourself fiercely
Your midlife body, with all its changes and experiences, is a testament to the life you've lived. It deserves to be celebrated, not hidden away.
Remember, the only beach body you need is your body... on a beach. So go out there, feel the sun on your skin, and turn up your self-love. You deserve to enjoy all the pleasure this season has to offer.
