What this episode is about

Society expects midlife women to fade into the background, but these 12 lessons prove that your 50s can be the most pleasure-filled, purpose-driven decade of your life.

Key takeaways

  • Each morning Gabriella asks what she would do today if age were not a factor. She says the answers have led her to some of her most joyful experiences.
  • Gabriella asks herself daily what would feel good right now. Sometimes it is five minutes of sunshine or a perfect cup of tea, sometimes a boundary that protects her energy.
  • In her 50s, Gabriella moved from criticizing what she dislikes about her body to celebrating what she likes. She calls starting weight training the best gift she gave herself.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "Is this it? Are my best years already behind me?"

I remember standing in front of the mirror on my 50th birthday, searching my reflection for signs of the woman I once was. On the inside, I still felt like I was in my twenties, but where had she really gone?

Little did I know that the decade ahead would become the most transformative, liberating, and pleasure-filled chapter of my life so far. Last month, I turned 59, and instead of dreading what comes next, I'm standing at this threshold with my arms wide open, ready to carry the wisdom of my 50s into an even more powerful decade ahead.

This is for every woman who's ever wondered if her best days are behind her, for every woman who's felt invisible or diminished as she ages, and for every woman who's secretly fighting against the number on her birthday cake instead of celebrating the wisdom those years have brought.

Lesson #1: Age Becomes Your Superpower, Not Your Limitation

The most liberating realization of my 50s has been that age is merely a number, not a prescription for how to live. What I discovered is that vitality doesn't diminish with age, it evolves. My energy might flow differently now, but it flows with more purpose, more intention, more wisdom behind it.

I've watched women decades older than me starting businesses, falling in love, traveling solo, learning new languages, living with a freedom that comes from shedding society's expectations. Every morning now I ask myself: what would I do today if age wasn't even a consideration? The answers have led me to some of my most joy-filled experiences.

Your Action Step: Ask yourself what adventure or expression you've been denying yourself because you thought you were too old. What if you released that limitation today?

Lesson #2: Claiming Pleasure Becomes a Revolutionary Act

One of the most powerful discoveries of my 50s has been reclaiming pleasure as my birthright in all its incredible forms. Society tells us that women in midlife are supposed to fade into the background, become invisible, stop taking up space. But pleasure (whether it's dancing like no one's watching, savoring a favorite meal, or reconnecting to your sensuality) is a radical act of self-love.

In my 50s, I decided to reclaim my right to feel good unapologetically. I realized that when I prioritize my pleasure, when I give myself permission to feel alive in my body, I become more creative, more generous, more present for everyone around me.

Pleasure isn't frivolous, it's fundamental. It's not selfish, it's necessary. And claiming it in a world that often tells midlife women to be small and selfless? That's nothing short of revolutionary.

Daily Practice: Ask yourself each morning, "What would feel good right now?" Sometimes the answer is as simple as five minutes of sunshine on your face or the perfect cup of tea. Honor whatever comes up.

Lesson #3: Your Body Deserves Love, Not Criticism

This body of mine has carried me through five decades of living. It's known joy, pain, pleasure, discomfort, creativity, and rest. How could I not love it for everything that it's given me?

In my 50s, I shifted from criticizing what I don't like to celebrating what I do: my strong legs for carrying me so far, my hips for allowing me to feel and move to music, my eyes for letting me see the beauty all around me. Starting weight training in my 50s was the best gift I could have given myself. It made me go from wanting to be skinny to wanting to be strong.

This shift wasn't just about appearance, it was about honoring this incredible vessel that carries my spirit through this one precious life. When I treat my body as an ally rather than an adversary, everything changes.

Key Insight: Your body is the only home you'll ever truly have. Making peace with it and celebrating it is one of the most profound gifts you can give yourself in midlife.

Lesson #4: Purpose Never Stops Growing and Changing

One of the most freeing discoveries of my 50s has been watching my sense of purpose evolve, expand, and deepen. I gave myself permission to learn new things. I started this podcast, moved to a new country, traveled alone. I rediscovered forgotten hobbies like swimming and listening to classical music that had been set aside during busy parenting years.

Here's the exciting part: our brains are still capable of forming new neural pathways. Learning something new in midlife isn't just possible, it's revitalizing. Every time we step out of our comfort zone to try something unfamiliar, we're creating new connections, new possibilities, new dimensions of ourselves.

Purpose isn't a fixed destination, but a living, breathing thing that grows as we do. The question isn't "What is my purpose?" but rather "What calls to me now in this season of my life?"

Quick Action Steps:

  • List three things you've always wanted to learn or create
  • Choose one to begin this month
  • Set aside 30 minutes this week to explore it

Lesson #5: Sexual Health Becomes Essential Self-Care

In my 50s, I've come to understand that sexual wellness isn't a luxury, it's a fundamental aspect of overall health that deserves the same attention as nutrition, exercise, and mental well-being. We're taught so little about our sexual health as women, and then when we start to experience changes in midlife, we're caught totally blindsided.

I learned about the benefits of lube, vaginal moisturizers, and vaginal estrogen as essential intimate care. I've learned to advocate for myself in the doctor's office. I've educated myself about my sexual anatomy and now shamelessly name all the parts: my vulva, my vagina, my clitoris. I talk openly about my needs with my partner and continue to learn about how my body is changing.

This isn't about maintaining youth, it's about honoring the continued importance of this aspect of our humanity throughout our lives. Your sexual wellness matters at every age.

Essential Actions:

  • Schedule regular check-ups that include sexual health discussions
  • Research and invest in quality intimate care products
  • Practice using anatomically correct terms for your body

Lesson #6: Rest Becomes the Foundation of Everything

In a world that prizes productivity above all else, discovering the power of rest has been life-changing. I used to wear my busyness like a badge of honor, as if exhaustion somehow proved my worth. Now I understand that rest isn't just about recovery, it's about creation.

It's in those quiet, unhurried moments that my best ideas emerge, that my body heals, that my spirit reconnects with what matters most. Rest looks different for everyone. For me, it's morning meditation, afternoon breaks for tea, weekends with no agenda, nature walks where I deliberately leave my phone behind.

When I honor my need for rest, I actually accomplish more... not by doing more, but by doing what matters with full presence and energy. Rest isn't laziness or luxury; it's the essential foundation upon which everything else in our lives is built.

Weekly Rest Ritual: Schedule one form of restorative rest into each day this week, whether it's 10 minutes of meditation, a phone-free walk, or an early bedtime.

Lesson #7: Your Inner Voice Becomes Your Greatest Guide

In my 50s, I've finally learned to trust the wisdom of my own knowing... that quiet voice within that always points toward truth. Self-awareness comes with age, and learning how to listen for those messages from your body when something feels off or feels good becomes clearer with each passing year.

I learned that every "no" creates space for a bigger, bolder "yes." Listening for that full-body yes is so empowering. When we set boundaries, we teach people how to treat us, and we reclaim our time and energy.

I no longer apologize for what I need. I no longer shrink my truth to make others comfortable. Clear boundaries aren't selfish, they're necessary for authentic connection and offering my best self to everyone around me.

Boundary Practice: This week, notice when your body says "no" to something. Honor that feeling and practice saying no without over-explaining or apologizing.

Lesson #8: Community Becomes Your Power Source

The women in my life have been my greatest teachers, my fiercest supporters, and my most honest mirrors. Throughout my 50s, I've learned that surrounding myself with women who uplift, inspire, and challenge me is non-negotiable.

Community is where we are seen, heard, and celebrated. It's where our experiences are validated, our wisdom is appreciated, and our growth is witnessed. Authentic community doesn't happen by accident, it requires intention. It means showing up with vulnerability, making time for connection even when life gets full, and celebrating other women's successes as enthusiastically as your own.

Connection Actions:

  • Send a heartfelt text to an old friend this week
  • Remember and acknowledge birthdays and special occasions
  • Show up with genuine interest in others' lives and experiences

Lesson #9: Mothering Evolves Into Something Beautiful

One of the most beautiful transformations of my 50s has been the evolution of my role as mother. Watching my children take flight was heartwarming yet unsettling. My nervous system was so wired to nurture and guide every milestone that letting go became its own journey.

We established Sunday family check-ins where we all meet on Zoom to share what's gone well, what challenges we face, what we're looking forward to, and who we're grateful for. When I listen to their insights and reflections, I'm so proud of the adults they're becoming and how they're teaching me to see the world through their eyes.

This evolution has created space for a new kind of relationship built on mutual respect and shared wisdom. It's also created space for me to rediscover aspects of myself that had been on hold during intensive parenting years.

Reflection Questions: How has your nurturing role evolved? What parts of yourself are ready to be expressed now?

Lesson #10: Intimacy Deepens in Unexpected Ways

Our relationships evolve just as we do. We change, our bodies change, our minds change. We wake up one day and realize we're not the same people who began this journey together. Holding space for each other as we navigate midlife changes takes courage and commitment.

I've learned that when we do this work, we find freedom and delight in seeing each other with fresh eyes. In my own relationship, we found new depths through communicating from a place of truth and love, practicing generosity and kindness, and finding new ways to coexist.

My husband travels for work during the week, so we're basically only together on weekends. We've learned to cherish that time... trying new restaurants, going to concerts, traveling. It's like dating all over again, getting to know who we are beyond parenting.

Relationship Refresh: Plan one new activity with your partner this month that allows you to see each other with fresh eyes.

Lesson #11: Grief and Gratitude Can Live Side by Side

One of the most profound gifts of my 50s has been learning to hold seemingly contradictory emotions simultaneously, especially grief and gratitude. I can feel grief watching my parents age, particularly my mother as her memory fades with dementia, yet alongside that grief lives profound gratitude that they're still with me.

This capacity to hold complexity (to not simplify our emotional experience into either/or) is one of midlife's greatest gifts. We become more emotionally nuanced, more capable of depth, more accepting of life's inherent contradictions.

When we make space for both grief and gratitude, we honor the fullness of our experience. We become more compassionate with ourselves and others. We learn that our hearts are big enough to hold it all.

Emotional Practice: Notice where you're experiencing both grief and gratitude in your life. Practice holding both feelings without needing to choose one over the other.

Lesson #12: Your Best Years Are Still Ahead

Standing at the threshold of my 60s, looking back at everything my 50s have taught me, I feel a surge of excitement and anticipation. With each passing year, I shed another layer of concern about others' opinions. I've grown more comfortable in my own skin, more certain of my worth, more clear about what matters to me.

I've accumulated wisdom, perspective, and the courage to live according to my own values rather than external expectations. My plan for this final year of my 50s? To step fully into my power, to show up bigger and bolder than ever, to make an impact, to speak my truth, to embody pleasure and purpose in equal measure.

We've earned this freedom... the freedom to be fully ourselves without apology or explanation. We've earned the right to take up space, to be seen and heard, to pursue what lights us up from the inside.

Your Legacy Questions: If you were living as your boldest, most authentic self, what would you create or express? What legacy do you want to build in these powerful decades of midlife and beyond?

Your Next Chapter Starts Now

These 12 lessons haven't just shaped my 50s, they've prepared me for the most exciting chapter yet. Age isn't a limitation; it's liberation. Your body isn't betraying you; it's carrying decades of wisdom. Your purpose isn't shrinking; it's expanding. Your best years aren't behind you; they're unfolding right now.

The world needs our wisdom, our voices, our leadership, and our love more than ever before. Let's refuse to shrink or fade or apologize for our existence. Let's be the women we needed to see when we were younger.

Your Action Plan:

  • Choose one lesson that resonated most deeply with you
  • Identify one specific action you'll take this week to honor that lesson
  • Share your intention with one supportive person in your life
  • Schedule time each week to reflect on your progress and insights

Remember: your pleasure matters, your voice matters, and your presence in this world matters at every age and stage. The most powerful decade of your life isn't behind you, it's waiting for you to claim it.
