The Truth About Sex and Menopause

While it's true that many women, myself included, experience a decline in desire during the transition to menopause, this does not have to be a permanent state. The reasons for lowered libido are multifactorial, including:

  • Physical, emotional, and mental health changes
  • Stress, overwhelm, and fatigue from hormonal fluctuations
  • Life, career, family, and relationship changes

However, relief can be found by seeking appropriate menopause healthcare, doing deep inner reflection work, and most importantly, prioritizing your pleasure. Science is proving over and over again that sexual pleasure has no age limit:

  • A recent Kinsey Institute study of women over 60 found 60% enjoy sex just as much or more than before
  • 1 in 5 women reported their orgasms are just as good or better in midlife
  • Couples surveyed reported that being completely present is the top secret to magnificent sex after 60

The Benefits of Sexual Activity During Menopause

Far from being something to avoid, staying sexually active during menopause can provide profound benefits to your overall health and wellbeing:

  • Strengthens emotional bonds and fosters deeper intimacy between partners
  • Releases hormones like dopamine and oxytocin that stabilize mood and promote happiness
  • Acts as a natural stress-reliever and anxiety-reducer
  • Improves blood flow and elasticity to keep vulval and vaginal tissues healthy
  • Strengthens pelvic floor muscles through orgasmic contractions
  • Boosts self-esteem, body image, and self-acceptance
  • May help maintain memory and cognitive function

Nurturing Your Sexual Health in Midlife

So how can you nurture your sexual health during menopause? It starts with getting to know yourself, your body, and what turns you on. Have open conversations with your partner about desires and physical changes. Seek guidance from your doctor on managing symptoms like dryness or discomfort. Most of all, take time to explore new dimensions of intimacy through sensual touch, communication, and trying new activities together.

Remember, menopause is not an ending but a new beginning. By embracing your sexuality during this chapter, you open the door to a richer, more pleasurable, and more satisfying life. Your pleasure has no expiration date!

Key Takeaways

  • Menopause does NOT mean the end of sexual pleasure
  • Staying sexually active provides many health and intimacy benefits
  • Prioritize getting to know your body and communicating with your partner
  • Reframe menopause as a new beginning full of possibilities for pleasure
